Baby, It’s Cold Outside – How to Care for Solid Wood Furniture in Winter

As we face these cooler temperatures in the heart of Winter, our homes naturally become cozier and more inviting. However, for solid wood furniture, this season can present unique challenges. Fluctuating humidity, indoor heating, and increased use can affect how natural wood ages and performs. This guide explores thoughtful ways to keep your furniture beautiful, stable and well protected this season.

Stabilize the Humidity

The single most important step is maintaining a consistent level of moisture in your home. A humidity level of 40-45% can help to prevent wood from drying out, shrinking, and cracking. Using a humidifier in main living areas or near particularly valuable pieces can go a long way in preserving the integrity of the joints and finish.

Keep Furniture Away From Heat Sources

Just Venting

Is your solid wood dining table sitting directly over a floor vent? Do you have a buffet or storage cabinet placed against a vent on the wall? Exposure to direct and concentrated heat can cause drying which has the potential to warp or discolor your wood. When possible, place your furniture at least one to foot away from a direct heating source to keep it safe from sudden bursts of warm air.

Drinks on Me

Heat sources also come in the form of warm mugs. Make sure to use coasters, place mats, and tablecloths all season long. That morning cup of coffee might not taste as good if it leaves a ring on your end table. Your lap top can generate heat, as well. Keep your desk or workspace protected and consider placing it away from direct sunlight.

Here Comes the Sun

Speaking of direct sunlight, the winter sun is not to be trifled with. The sun sits lower in the sky during the colder months, causing new and different sunbeams to find their way through the windows. Furniture that was safe during the summer months may now be in the path of direct afternoon sunlight. These beams (while warm, bright, and often welcome) can fade finish over time. Consider rotating pieces or partially closing curtains or blinds during peak sun hours.

Give your Furniture A Quick Face Lift

Before the cold fully settles in, take some time for rejuvenation. It’s all about aging gracefully and caring for your furniture is like caring for your own skin. Start with a light dusting using a soft cloth. If needed, use a cloth slightly dampened with mild, soapy water and then allow the piece to completely dry. Once dry, apply a nourishing wood oil or wax to condition the wood, lock in moisture and give your piece a natural, healthy glow. At Unfinished Furniture of Wilmington, we recommend avoiding silicone-based sprays. These products form a sticky buildup which attracts dust and pet hair and can also cause a cloudy appearance.

At Unfinished Furniture of Wilmington, we believe that furniture should last as long as possible. With a little seasonal care, your solid wood pieces can stay warm, resilient, and inviting all winter long. As always, our team is just an email or phone call away. Let us know how we can help!
