Wood Species

Poplar wood is known for its affordability and lightweight nature.  It accepts paint, enamel and stains well.  It is a relatively soft wood and may scratch or dent more easily than a denser hardwood.

Pine is a softwood.  It features a fine texture and a knotty grain.  It has a high resistance to shock, making it a great choice for furniture-making applications. Pine wood is also resistant to shrinking and swelling.  Though it is lightweight and easy to work with, Pine can be susceptible to scratches and dents.  An oil-based sealer can be used to protect the wood and also helps to bring out its character and grain.

Oak wood is a sturdy, durable choice for furniture.  It is a hardwood that is resistant to decay.  Oak is easy to work with and looks great stained or with a clear, natural finish.  It has a unique grain pattern that makes it one of the easier species to recognize.
