Wood Species

Radiata Pine

Radiata Pine is a plantation grown wood and has very wide growth rings and is knot-free. It has a straight grain with a medium, even texture.  Radiata is somewhat stronger than Eastern White Pine but less hard than Southern Yellow Pine.

The absents of knots makes this suitable for painting as there is no need for a Shellac based primer as there are no chances of blead through.  The full range of interior and exterior stains, oils, varnishes and paints may be used on radiata pine. The absence of high concentrations of extractives prevents any incompatibility with finishes and eliminates the need for special primers. A very high standard of finishing can be obtained.

In the southern hemisphere, where pines are to a large extent absent, Radiata Pine is the most commonly planted and cultivated pine. It is valued on plantations for its fast growth and utility as both a source of construction lumber as well as wood pulp in the paper industry.
