About the 430 Classic Jumbo Rocker:

430 Classic Rocker

Spot this rocker at airports across America for traveler rest and relaxation. We hope you give it a test rock! This chair was built sturdy for many to enjoy. Relax your cares away in our tried and true Classic Rocker style that has wide splayed arms to give you more room inside the chair for the best rock of your life.

The 430 rocker is the original Oak rocker made in North Carolina by Troutman Chair Company since 1924. It is by far one of the best rockers made today.

This rocker has a taller back to rest your head, as well as a scooped seat for additional comfort.

Made from solid Oak, the Classic Jumbo rocker has no glue in its construction and it uses wood with different moisture contents in its construction. As a result it has an interlocking swell joint that get stronger with age.

Rockers of this quality are meant to be finished and put on a covered porch or showcased indoors.

Troutman Chair uses water-based urethanes designed for outdoor use, however, we recommend keeping products undercover for longevity.

As a result, they are not intended to be placed in direct weather.

This rocker is available in a variety of colors.

We try to keep the White in our general inventory at our store.  All other colors are special order.

Minor assembly required. Rocker runners will need to be attached. Please use instructions and nails included with the runners. This is very important as personal injury and/or chair damage could occur if runners are not assembled properly.

Wood Species

Vertically Integrated

Oak logs are brought on-site from local loggers and then milled at Troutman Chair’s own sawmill making us one of the last vertically integrated furniture manufacturers in the United States. The wood is cut to dimension, stacked, and dried. Due to the nature of construction, no glue is found in a Troutman product.

Shaker Construction

Purchasing and milling our own lumber allows us to utilize a time-honored technique called “swelled joint construction.” Swelled joint construction is a technique of furniture construction borrowed from Shaker design. Moisture content in the lumber is closely monitored and when it reaches the right point, the wood is made into base pieces. Larger posts (front and back posts) have a higher moisture content than the smaller posts (rungs). With the variance in moisture content, the small posts swell as they absorb moisture from the larger posts and the larger posts shrink as they lose moisture to smaller parts making a much tighter fit than if they had been glued. A Troutman chair will get tighter over time.

Another Shaker construction technique rarely used in today’s manufacturing processes is “interlocking joinery.” The front frame and back frame of the chairs and rockers are assembled separately. When these two parts are clamped together, the boring on each frame notches the dowel on the front post and back post making it near impossible for the front assembly or the back assembly to be pulled apart. Using swelled joint construction and interlocking joinery assures our customers the furniture they purchase is built for lifetimes of use.

With more and more furniture manufacturing being done overseas, Troutman Chair Co. feels a sense of pride in knowing that they are seeing to the continuation of a true Southern tradition – promoting rocking on the porch and manufacturing furniture in the time-honored, American way
of the master craftsman.

Manufacturer Info

Since 1924

Troutman Chair Co., established in 1924, has been family-owned since its inception. The Brown family of Troutman, North Carolina is responsible for starting and maintaining the quality manufacturing process of solid wood furniture for almost three-quarters of a century.

In 1999, Champ and Jean Land purchased Troutman Chair Co. continuing the tradition of handcrafted furniture in the same manner established back in 1924 – with farmhouse, shaker-style chairs, rockers, stools,  and tables. A true family-run business, the Land’s son Cam is now a driving creative force.

A Tradition of Excellence

Since 1999 the Land family has made few changes to the Troutman Chair Co. business and products. The goal of purchasing a company already manufacturing the best product in its category and enjoying a near-perfect reputation was to merely enhance the best and offer it to the rest of the country: Troutman products were historically sold only in the Southeast. Troutman now ships anywhere in the continental United States and as far as Germany. Minor adjustments were made to the products over time – the Lands added a deluxe finish line with stain and painted finishes. They moved to stainless steel nails and arm braces to avoid rusting. Since taking over, the Lands have expanded the product catalog and continue to look for new ways to bring quality made wood products into customers’ homes, on front porches, resorts, and in unique places like airports.

In this time when a good deal of furniture manufacturing is being done overseas with cheap materials and plastic, the Land family feels a sense of pride in knowing that they are overseeing the continuation of a true Southern tradition – hand-making rockers the time-honored, quality way of old master craftsman.
